hammering it out

i started doing some concept sketches for my thesis. today i'll show you the female half of my two main characters.

here's a bunch of heads. the two big ones in the middle are the newest, and closest to the look i'm going for. i don't think i'm quite there yet though.

a few bodies. the third is definitely most developed, but i don't think i like the thunder thighs.
but of course, the one that i spent the least time drawing and thinking about has gotten the most praise!

a crucial part of a good story has to do with whether or not you like the characters. in some of those sketches, i like her, and some of them, i hate. she's supposed to be a talented singer/dancer/stage performer who was literally picked up off the street. because she's so green and eager to live out her dreams, it is easy for her to be taken advantage of, which is the major plot point in my film.

but it's difficult to make someone who is beautiful, talented, and modest likeable. if they are flawless then what is the point in rooting for whatever dumb goal they have in mind? another thing that needs to be considered is that my film has no dialogue, so this all needs to be conveyed in body language.

give me your thoughts!
